From Wednesday 23rd May, Sainsbury’s will be stocking 100% British strawberries. Due to adverse weather the start of the season comes 2-3 weeks later than last year. The fruit is grown across Britain from Scotland to Kent to work around varied weather conditions and to maximise the season.
Ian Cambridge, Sainsbury's strawberry buyer says: "Strawberries are typically associated with the great British summer so it's great to announce that customers will see 100% deliveries from this Wednesday. As the weather begins to pick up and we near the summer celebrations there's no better time to enjoy home-grown strawberries.
As we've seen such varied weather this spring and supply has been slow we've worked closely with our growers to get British strawberries and other fruit in store when it tastes its best. As the weather has been so unreliable I'd encourage customers to take advantage while it lasts - try them with Sainsbury's Lemon and Earl Grey infused cream for dessert."
British strawberries including basics, Taste the Difference and SO Organic will be available in Sainsbury's stores from Wednesday 23 May. British varieties available in Sainsbury's include Buddy, Jubilee and Windsor - a variety that launched to celebrate Sainsbury's 140th anniversary.
